Congressman King in RI September 2nd

Sunday, August 29th, 2010

Congressman Peter King is coming to Rhode Island this Thursday in support of my campaign for Congress.  We’ve got two great events planned including a boardroom discussion on the impact of the 2010 elections on financial regulation as well as a luncheon at Ten Prime Steak and Sushi.  I hope you can join us!

Congressman King is the Ranking Member of the Homeland Security Committee and serves on the Financial Services Committee as well as the Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence.

Celebrate Women’s Suffrage

Wednesday, August 25th, 2010
I’ve often said that I’m running for Congress for my two daughters, Tori and Carrie.  My concern about the country and the state that they will live in is what inspired me to run for Congress.
All of us have women in our lives that inspire us — a mother, a wife, a teacher or even a colleague.  We are thankful to have them in our lives and tonight we celebrated their right to vote with a wonderful “Women for Loughlin” event.
If you have a woman in your life that you’d like to honor by giving her representation in Washington that she will be proud of, please click the “CONTRIBUTE” button and help me win this race for Congress.  Contributions of all sizes are welcome but it was $90 years ago that women secured the right to vote in the year $19.20!
Thanks for your support!

What Other Democrats Say About David Cicilline’s Providence

Wednesday, August 25th, 2010

David Cicilline says he’s proud of his record in Providence but the Democrats that look to succeed him seem to think that he’s leaving quite a mess behind.  But don’t take it from me – the Democrats can certainly speak for themselves – and did — during last night’s debate.

Steven Costantino, Democratic Candidate for Mayor of Providence:

“Thousands are without jobs.  1.5 million square feet lies empty and vacant.  There’s $50 million in debt and large holes plague our streets.  Yes the present picture is dim.”

Angel Taveras, Democratic Candidate for Mayor of Providence:

“We have too many people who can’t find jobs and can’t support their families.  More than half of our children are not doing math or reading at grade level.  We have a massive unfunded pension liability that has exploded while my opponents have been in office.  It’s time for new leadership to move our city forward.

Christopher Young, Democratic Canddiate for Mayor of Providence:

“The Latino community obviously has suffered under the leadership of David Cicilline.  We have the highest failure rate among Latinos in Providence in our school system in the entire country.”

Even the moderator joined in:

Tim White, Moderator

“The grand prize for winning the seat of mayor is inheriting a punishing unfunded liability in the retirement system, an unemployment rate in the city that is approaching 15%, a mountain of foreclosed homes and underperforming schools.”

The return of “Big Blue”

Sunday, August 22nd, 2010

For twenty years and more than 215,000 miles, my 1990 Chevrolet C-1500 pick-up has been more than transportation, she’s been a like a member of the family.  She was my daily ride when I worked for NASA in Washington, DC and even saw active duty at Ft. Bragg, North Carolina but the miles and the years had been tough on her.  Now she’s ready for duty in the final phase of the campaign, thanks to a much needed makeover by Tiverton’s Ken’s Auto Body.  Big Blue is on the campaign trail!

Look for us as we crisscross Rhode Island’s First Congressional District and give us a friendly honk as you pass by (she’s not as quick as she was a few hundred thousand miles ago).  Check out the before and after shots in my Flickr feed.

It’s about respect

Sunday, August 15th, 2010

I disagree with President Obama’s support of the construction of a mosque near the site where thousands of Americans were killed by radical Islamic jihadists.

All of us support the right of people to practice their religion. No one would deny that to Muslims or any other faith. That is not at issue here. Out of deference to the wishes of the families of the deceased, and to deny extremists fodder for their anti-American propaganda, we should not construct a mosque near Ground Zero. I believe we should look for an alternative location that would permit Muslims a new place to worship while also respecting the memories of the fallen.

Cutting taxes creates jobs — we have proof

Sunday, August 1st, 2010

On Friday John’s Jobs Tour made a stop at Newport Shipyard where we held a press conference with business leaders from the narine trades industry.  The substance of the press conference was this: when Governor Sundlun elinimated the sales tax on boats in 1993, it was a boon to Rhode Island’s boating industry.  Since then, more than 3,500 JOBS have been created, new companies have been started and this industry is the one shining light in the state’s economy.

Let’s face it – the stimulus was a bust.  We’ve lost billions in borrowed money and we’re not any better off.  We need to do what leaders on both sides of the aisle have done — from Kennedy and Sundlun to Reagan and Bush — we need to cut taxes, give more money back to the folks who earned it and let the entrepreneurs and innovators do what they do best — make superior products and earn money.
