SERVICE ABOVE SELF

“I don’t know Brendan Doherty personally. I have no reason to believe he is anything other than an honorable person of good character, integrity and competence.  He has had a very successful career in law enforcement ultimately rising to the top leadership position in the Rhode Island State Police. However, I am disappointed he has decided to engage in a primary battle with John Loughlin to determine who gets the privilege of taking on David Ciccilline to represent Rhode Island’s 1st Congressional District. Such a republican primary contest between two good men will only serve to consume limited campaign funds leaving the primary winner’s campaign assets seriously depleted when they will be most needed in the effort to unseat David Ciccilline in 2012.

I believe John Loughlin, and only John Loughlin, has earned and is most deserving of the right to run (again) for Congress against Mr. Ciccilline.  John had the courage and commitment to run for this office when the incumbent was Patrick Kennedy. It was not known at that time that Patrick would decide not to seek reelection.  Patrick was and would have been a most formidable opponent. Not many gave John much of a shot of defeating Congressman Kennedy.

The campaign John ran against the winner of the democratic primary race, David Ciccilline, was honorable and conducted on a lean budget. He came within 5 percentage points of beating the former Mayor of Providence. He ran a principled campaign against a less principled opponent, as evidenced by the post election revelations about just how brazenly Mr. Ciccilline misrepresented the city’s dire financial condition. Had the truth about Providence’s serious budget problems been forthrightly acknowledged or appropriately investigated by the media when raised by Mr. Loughlin, I am confident the election result would have been different and the people of Rhode Island’s 1st Congressional District now would be represented by the better man.

I believe we need men and women in the United States Congress whose lives exemplify strong moral character, rock solid integrity, a strong sense of personal honor and above average competence. The country desperately needs men and women to serve in political office at all levels of government - federal, state and local – who are sincere in their commitment to putting “service above self”.  I believe John Loughlin is such a man. His commitment has been exemplified by the years of service he has rendered to his state and country in the United States Army Reserves. Although retired with the rank of Lieutenant Colonel, he answered his country’s call again when asked to come out of retirement to fill a need in Iraq. He left in May for a seven month deployment in Iraq – SERVICE ABOVE SELF.  John Loughlin is a good man and the right guy to defeat Mr. Ciccilline in the 2012 congressional election.

He has earned my loyalty and support and is deserving of the loyalty and support of every Repubican and Independent and concerned Democrats residing within the 1st congressional district. This country desperately needs men and women of John Loughlin’s character and caliber.”

Respectfully,

Peter A. Hewett
